More about the New Bern Resolves:
In August 1774, at the Craven County Court House in New Bern, 71 elected delegates representing 30 of 36 counties of the Colony of North Carolina, met for the 1st NC Provincial Congress. At this meeting during August 25-27, the delegates voiced numerous egregious acts that had been imposed upon the Colonists by the Royal Crown and the British Parliament. In response, they penned 28 resolutions or “resolves” that focused on “the rights of British American subjects” and economic sanctions against Great Britain and their trading partners.” This was the first Provincial Congress in America to meet in open defiance of royal authority. Their actions served as a catalyst for a series of resolves from other Provincial Congresses, each edging toward the American Revolution.
